“Happy birthday to me! Sometimes you’ve got to choose yourself over a high-maintenance wife,” he joked to the camera while his friends cheered.
I closed my eyes, the cold seeping into my marrow. Ethan’s cries grew softer, weaker… until there was nothing left but the whistle of the wind.
Three days later, Ryan returned. He was humming a victory tune, a souvenir watch from Aspen shining on his wrist. He unlocked the door, expecting a welcome-home dinner. Instead, he walked into a ghost story.
The nursery was abandoned. The bassinet sat empty. No wife. No baby. No sound. The souvenir watch slipped from his wrist, shattering against the floor along with his arrogance. Ryan screamed my name in a blind panic, but the house only answered with hollow echoes.Ryan bolted down the hallway, his boots thudding against the hardwood. “”Emma! Ethan!”” He threw open the door to our master bedroom. Empty. The closets were stripped of my clothes, and the dresser drawers hung open like gasping mouths.
Panic, sharp and cold, finally broke through his thick layer of narcissism. He spun around, intending to run back to his car, but stopped dead in his tracks.
Standing at the base of the grand staircase was my father, General Thomas Vance.
He wasn’t alone. Behind him stood two uniform Denver police officers and a man in a sharp business suit holding a legal briefcase. My father stood rigid, his hands clasped behind his back, wearing the exact same icy, unblinking expression he used when commanding troops.
Ryan’s breath hitched. He tried to force his signature, charming smile onto his face, but it twisted into a pathetic grimace. “”General… Thomas. Sir. What’s going on? Where’s Emma? Where’s my son?””
“”Your son is safe,”” my father said, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the quiet foyer. “”And my daughter is currently in the intensive care unit at Denver Health, recovering from severe postpartum hemorrhaging and sepsis. The doctors said if she had been left alone for another twelve hours, she would have died.””
Ryan went entirely pale, his knees visibly shaking. “”I… I didn’t know. She said she felt bad, but I thought she was just being—””
“”Dramatic?”” My father stepped forward, the heavy click of his boots echoing off the walls. Ryan instinctively flinched. “”You left a dying woman and a ten-day-old infant alone in a house for three days so you could drink whiskey in Aspen. You chose yourself, Ryan. And now, choices have consequences.””
The man in the suit stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of papers from his briefcase. “”Mr. Reynolds, my name is David Vance, Emma’s uncle and head of Vance Legal Holdings. I am serving you with emergency divorce papers, an immediate freeze on all joint accounts, and a temporary restraining order. You are to vacate this property within thirty minutes.””
“”Vacate?”” Ryan stammered, looking around frantically. “”This is my house! My family bought—””
“”Your family’s firm bought this house using a structural loan from my logistics company,”” General Vance interrupted coldly. “”A loan I called in exactly two days ago when I found my daughter unconscious on this floor. The bank seized the asset. You own nothing here.””
Ryan looked at the police officers, his voice rising in pitch. “”You can’t do this! I have rights! I’m Ethan’s father!””
“”Not anymore,”” my father said. He walked right up to Ryan, forcing the younger man to look up into his fierce, unyielding eyes. “”The officers are here to ensure you pack one duffel bag and leave. If you ever attempt to contact Emma, or if you ever breathe the same air as my grandson again, I won’t use the law to handle you. Do you understand me?””
The absolute certainty in my father’s voice broke Ryan completely. The arrogant, untouchable birthday boy dissolved into a trembling, pathetic mess. He looked down at the shattered souvenir watch on the floor, realizing his entire gilded life had collapsed in the span of three days. Without another word, he turned and walked toward the guest room to pack, escorted closely by the two officers.
My father watched him go, then pulled out his phone. His face softened instantly as he dialed.
“”Emma, sweetheart,”” he said gently into the receiver. “”It’s done. The house is empty. I’m coming back to the hospital now. Give Ethan a kiss for me.””
As my father walked out of the hollow estate into the crisp Colorado air, the shadow Ryan had cast over my life finally evaporated. I was in a hospital bed, weak but healing, with my beautiful son wrapped tightly in my arms. Ryan had his luxury getaway, but I had my life, my family, and a future he could never touch again.
